Please keep in mind that under Governor Kelly's current executive order masks would be mandatory for all people inside the school when school starts. If the county commissioners would overturn her mandate, our school district would go with Stage 1, the least restrictive one.

Quick correction. The first day of school is on Thursday August 13 and it is a half day. Thank you.

Good afternoon. I wanted to remind everyone that the first day of school is Wednesday, August 13 and it is a half day with dismissal at 12:30.
Due to the health and safety concerns, we will not be having a Meet the Teacher Night this year. Also, on the first day of school, Wednesday, August 13, regretfully we will not be able allow parents inside the building to escort their kids to class on the first day. It's a tradition that I have always loved myself but due to the current situation, we will not be able to do that this year. Feel free to take all the pictures you want of your children in front of the school on this special day.
Thank you for understanding and have a good evening.
Mr. Poell

I wanted to share more information regarding Remote Learning which will be offered through our school district at this time.
If any parent choose to have their child take part in remote learning virtually, there are several things to keep in mind.
1. The student will be expected to be logged in and participate with their classmates at regularly scheduled class times. Attendance will be taken and students learning virtually, will have the same expectations as all of the students in the classroom. All district policies are in effect with students learning virtually through USD 322.
2. A Remote Learning student must participate in 6 hours (360 minutes) of learning activity each day. They will have a Remote Learning Daily Log that parents and students must fill out and sign each day and keep track of. They will have to be turned in periodically to the school for documentation purposes.
3. If a student starts out with Remote Learning from home and decides later they want to attend class in person, we can make that change. We can do this 1-2 times per semester.
4. If you plan for your child to take part in the USD 322 Remote Learning, please let Mr. Poell no later than Tuesday, August 4, as many details/arrangements/etc. need to be made soon for those that choose virtual/remote learning of their children. Please email me at poellt@usd322.org if you plan to have your child go with remote/virtual learning starting on Aug 13. Also feel free to email me if you have questions. Thank you!

USD 322 parents/guardians - If you are needing help purchasing additional items for school supplies, for high school students or supplies needed that teachers request such as nap mats or earbuds etc. please get ahold of me at koltermanju@usd322.org or on Facebook or my personal cell phone....however you feel comfortable so we can get your student set up for a successful year! We are able to provide these items through our districts Caring Closet! *****PATHS have generously purchased school supplies for grade school students and along with funds from the kitchen’s cookie sales this year, they are also able to provide many of the Jr High supplies as well!! Thank you!!

Here is the rest of the USD 322 Return to Learn Plan information for 2020-2021. Thank you.
Return to school of a fever patient or positive test, is dependent on doctor’s note OR consultation and approval of school nurse.
Any Parent/guardian concerned about their students’ pre-existing health or a member of the family’s pre-existing health condition, or who simply chooses not to send their student/s for fear of contracting the virus. There will be remote learning/virtual education provided by the district. Unlike the spring this will be regular curriculum, regular expectations, regular accountability and regular grading. Any Parent/guardian concerned about their students’ pre-existing health when it comes to wearing a mask are to get a Doctor’s note to allow non-use of a mask.
All will wear masks on any trips away from school, if “off” (not during school times) temps. will be taken too. All will wear masks if attend school activities (except “dressed” athletes/coaches) unless required to by the state association.
NO OUTSIDE VISITORS/VENDORS ALLOWED IN THE SCHOOL UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.
If a case/cases—-exposed students/people or “class” will be temperature checked 2 times a day (before school, and at or after lunch). If operating under #1 or #2 and are exposed will then wear masks 24/7 for ten school days. If three multi-grade non family related cases in elem. (K-6) or three in high school, (7-12), that “school” will have a 10 school day stay at home and work remotely order, to return at the end of that time. Upon the first case, if we are in stage one, we will immediately move to stage 2. Once in stage 2 we will not move to stage 3 unless we have had to take 10 days in either the elem. or high school. Upon return to school we will be in stage three for an undetermined length of time. ALL must be prepared for partial population electronic learning in a variety of ways. OTHER “powers” or a continued outbreak beyond what is described, may close on site schooling for an undetermined length of time.
Regardless of where schooling is taking place; this year WILL BE DIFFERENT FROM THE SPRING as accountability and full grading will be utilized. Anyone using remote learning will have logs and information to fill out to do so.
The school board has elected to go with stage ____ to begin the year
OTHER INFORMATION/PLANS:
• Employee or Student Exhibiting COVID-19 Symptoms
If an employee or student exhibits COVID-19 symptoms, the employee/student must remain at home until he or she is symptom free for 24 hours (1 full day) without the use of fever-reducing or other symptom-altering medicines (e.g., cough suppressants). The District will similarly require an employee that reports to work with symptoms to return home until they are symptom free for 24 hours (1full day). To the extent practical, employees are required to obtain a doctor’s note clearing them to return to work.
• Employee or Student Tests Positive for COVID-19
An employee or student that tests positive for COVID-19 will be directed to self-quarantine away from school. Employees or students that test positive and are symptom free may return to school when at least ten school days have passed since the date of his or her first positive test, and have not had a subsequent illness. Employees or students exhibiting symptoms that test positive and are directed to care for themselves at home may return to school when: 1. at least 72 hours (3 full days) have passed since recovery; and 2. (10) days have passed since symptoms first appeared. Employees or students that test positive and have been hospitalized may return to school when directed to do so by their medical care provider. The District will require an employee to provide documentation clearing their return to work.
• Employee or Student Has Close Contact with a Tested Positive COVID-19 Individual
o Schools ARE considered “Critical Infrastructure” or “Essential”
To ensure continuity of operations of essential functions, CDC advises that critical infrastructure workers may be permitted to continue work following potential exposure to COVID-19, provided they remain asymptomatic and additional precautions are implemented to protect them and the community.
A potential exposure means being a household contact or having close contact within 6 feet of an individual with confirmed or suspected COVID-19. The timeframe for having contact with an individual includes the period of time of 48 hours before the individual became symptomatic.
Critical Infrastructure persons who have had an exposure but remain asymptomatic can continue school and should adhere to the following practices prior to and during their school day:
• Pre-Screen: Officials will measure the student’s temperature and assess symptoms prior to entering the school. Ideally, temperature checks should happen before the individual enters the facility.
• Regular Monitoring: As long as the student doesn’t have a temperature or symptoms, they should self-monitor under the supervision of their school nurse. Mid-Day student temperatures will be measured adjacent to lunch periods.
• Wear a Mask: The student should wear a face mask at all times while in the school for at minimum 10 school days after last exposure. School officials can issue facemasks or can approve student cloth face coverings in the event of shortages.
• Social Distance: The student should maintain 6 feet and practice social distancing as work duties permit in the school.
• Disinfect and Clean work spaces: Clean and disinfect all areas such as offices, bathrooms, common areas, shared electronic equipment routinely.
If the District learns that an employee or student has tested positive, the District will investigate co-workers or students that may have had close contact with the confirmed-positive employee or student in the prior 14 days and if operating under stage 1 or 2 direct those individuals to wear a mask OR if that is objectionable, self-quarantine for 10 school days from the last date of close contact with the carrier. If an employee or student learns that he or she has come into close contact with a confirmed-positive individual outside of the workplace, he/she must alert a principal or supervisor of the close contact and wear a mask OR if that is objectionable, self-quarantine for 10 days from the last date of close contact with the carrier.
If a confirmed case of COVID-19 is reported, the District will assess the situation. The Districts assessment will consider the work environment itself, the type of work performed, risk of person-to-person transmission given the work environment, and other factors such as community spread. Further, if an employee has a confirmed case of COVID-19 that is considered work-related, the District will work collaboratively with the individual to report the case to the local health department.
• Employee Exhibiting COVID-19 Symptoms
If an employee exhibits COVID-19 symptom, the employee must remain at home until he or she is symptom free for 24 hours (1 full day) without the use of fever-reducing or other symptom-altering medicines (e.g., cough suppressants). The District will similarly require an employee that reports to work with symptoms to return home until they are symptom free for 24 hours (1full day).
1. Employee Exhibiting Symptoms will be asked to stay home and be required to use their sick, or discretionary leave.
2. If symptoms continue longer than 24 hours, please consult your doctor or local health department. To the extent practical, employees are required to obtain a doctor’s note clearing them to return to work.
• Employee Tests Positive for COVID-19
An employee that tests positive for COVID-19 will be directed to self-quarantine away from school. Employees that test positive and are symptom free may return to school when at least ten (10) school days have passed since the date of his or her first positive test, and have not had a subsequent illness. Employees exhibiting symptoms that test positive and are directed to care for themselves at home may return to school when: 1. at least 72 hours (3 full days) have passed since recovery; and 2. (10) school days have passed since symptoms first appeared. Employees that test positive and have been hospitalized may return to school when directed to do so by their medical care provider. The District will require an employee to provide documentation clearing their return to work.
1. Employees Testing positive will be directed to stay home and be required to use their sick, or discretionary leave.
2. If an employee wishes to qualify for leave under the “Families First Coronavirus Response Act”, the employee must complete the “Emergency Paid Sick Leave Request Form” This form must be submitted within 48 hours to the USD 322 central office.
3. If an employee qualifies for leave under the “Families First Coronavirus Response Act”, leave may be granted up to 2 weeks or 80 hours per school year.

• Pre-Screen: Employers should measure the employee’s temperature and assess symptoms prior to them starting work. Ideally, temperature checks should happen before the individual enters the facility.
• Regular Monitoring: As long as the employee doesn’t have a temperature or symptoms, they should self-monitor under the supervision of their employer’s occupational health program.
• Wear a Mask: The employee should wear a face mask at all times while in the workplace for at minimum 10 school days after last exposure. Employers can issue facemasks or can approve employees’ supplied cloth face coverings in the event of shortages.

Several States and localities are issuing orders that prohibit work and travel, except for essential businesses. In general, Education has been deemed “Essential” or “Critical Infrastructure” and the District is committed to continuing operations safely. If upon your travel to and from school, you are stopped by State or local authorities, you will provide your district identification to authorities indicating that you are employed in an “essential” industry and are commuting to and from work.
Except for circumstances in which the District is legally required to report workplace occurrences of communicable disease, the confidentiality of all medical conditions will be maintained in accordance with applicable law and to the extent practical under the circumstances. When it is required, the number of persons who will be informed of an employee’s condition will be kept at the minimum needed not only to comply with legally-required reporting, but also to assure proper care of the employee and to detect situations where the potential for transmission may increase. A sample notice to employees and student is attached to this Plan. The District reserves the right to inform other employees that a co-worker (without disclosing the person’s name) has been diagnosed with COVID-19 if the other employees might have been exposed to the disease so the employees may take measures to protect their own health.
IF USD 322 GOES TO VIRTUAL/REMOTE LEARNING AT ANY POINT DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR, THE STAFF WILL BE EXPECTED TO STILL PUT IN REGULAR HOURS AT THE SCHOOL IN FULLFILLING VIRTUAL / REMOTE LEARNING NEEDS OF THE STUDENTS.

After gathering input from parents and staff the USD 322 COVID Return to Learn Plan is now in place. The USD Board of Education voted to begin the year with Stage 1 Return to Learn- See Below:
THE STATUS OR STAGE WILL DEPEND ON A VARIETY OF THINGS INCLUDING STATE AND/OR LOCAL MANDATES, COVID 19’S PRESENCE/EFFECTS LOCALLY AND REGIONALLY, AND POSSIBLY OTHER EVENTS. WE WILL, MORE THAN LIKELY, HAVE POSSIBLE TRANSITION BETWEEN STAGES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
Stage 1. The temperatures of all kids/staff will be taken EVERY Day before school. The bus drivers will take the temps of all kids getting on the bus, the secretaries/paras will take temps of staff and any town walkers or parent drop offs (at their offices/doors). If a young sibling is running a temp when getting ready to board the bus, an older sibling will need to stay home with them if there is no adult home. There will be a staff member taking temps. at the “commuter” door. If anyone has a temp. over 100.4 they will immediately be sent home. Family members of that student will also be asked to wear a mask 24/7 at school, or could choose to go home. If someone has a temp during day they will immediately be isolated/sent home, and the same choice can be had by family members. Only the teacher opens and closes door/s..... altered travel and lunch locations so whole populations together less. Distance as best we can in rooms.
SPECIAL NOTE: CURRENTLY GOVERNOR KELLY’S EXECUTIVE ORDER REQUIRES MASKS OF EVERYONE IN SCHOOLS. IT IS CURRENTLY UNKNOWN IF THE POTT COUNTY COMMISSIONERS CAN OR WILL TRY TO OVERRIDE THE EXECUTIVE ORDER. IF THEY DO, WE ARE IN STAGE 1 (SEE ABOVE)
If Governor Kelly’s Executive Order remains in place, starting on August 13, all staff, students, and visitors to the school are required to wear masks and we begin the year in Stage 3. See below:
Stage 3. The temperatures of all kids/staff will be taken EVERY Day before school. The bus drivers will take the temps of all kids getting on the bus, the secretaries/paras will take temps of staff and any town walkers or parent drop offs (at their doors). There will be a staff member taking temps. at the “commuter” door. If anyone has a temp. over 100.4 they will immediately be sent home. If someone has a temp during day they will immediately be isolated/sent home. Masks worn 24/7 while at school with 6 ft distancing at all times in all areas as much as possible.
VIRTUAL EDUCATION AND HOMESCHOOLING:
Virtual Learning Option through USD 322: Students who will not attend class in person have the option to take part in Virtual Learning through our school. There are much higher student expectations and much higher accountability for virtual learning in the 20-21 school year. More information over the next several days will give more specifics about what these expectations and guidelines are. Students that are enrolled in our district and take classes via our virtual learning from our teachers, ARE eligible to participate in school extracurriculars (sports, academic, fine arts, etc).
Students whose parents choose to homeschool by a third party (K12, Lawrence Virtual School, etc) or teach their own children, have the right to take a class offered by our school. However, any student who is not FULL TIME enrolled in our school’s in person or virtual learning offered by USD 322, IS NOT ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN USD 322 EXTRACURRICULARS.
Much more information on our plans for student and staff safety as well as what protocol we will follow if and when a COVID case occurs, will be found in these plans. These will be shared later today.
SPECIAL NOTE: The USD 322 approved increasing our school nurse’s hours from 8 hours a week to 20 hours per week. She will be here 4 hours per day, 5 days a week.
Much more information will be going out from today through the next couple of weeks. Thanks for your tremendous patience and grace as we work through this challenge together.

Good morning, fellow Buffaloes!
Here are several important announcements that we wanted to share today with all parents and students.
1. Our district will have a virtual, remote learning option for those that are not comfortable sending their child back to school with the current COVID situation. Please note that in comparison to what we did last spring, this will have higher expectations, accountability, and students using this option would be a part of Zoom so they can participate live with the in person class going on in the school. More details to be announced in the future about this.
2. 6th grade band will no longer be mandatory.
3. The district has decided to no longer use The Leader in Me curriculum for social- emotional learning in the district. Instead, our counselors are working with the teachers to provide high quality, other SEL programs that teachers will research and choose for their different grade bands (PK-2, 3-5, 6-8,9-12). We are confident that we can successfully meet their SEL needs with different programs and approaches.
Thank you and please keep safe!
