On Saturday, May 7, senior Joey Marten traveled to Salina to participate in the 1A Kansas State Forensics Championship in the category of Extempt. Extempt consists of drawing a question relevant in the news (usually political) and you have 30 minutes to research and write a 7-minute speech defending your point of view on the topic. At the state competition, you have to make it in the top 12 to go to the semi-finals, and then the top 6 to make it to the finals. That is five different topics and speeches that you have to give in a day. Joey did an excellent job in all five, and walked away as the new Kansas 1A State Forensics Champion in this event. A lot of hard work goes into any state event, and his hard work paid off. Joey has been in Forensics all four years. Congratulations on your state championship Joey!!!

Just a reminder that the Onaga Football Alumni organization is holding its annual golf tournament fundraiser on alumni weekend this year again which is this Saturday, May 7th. There is a typo in one of the flyers that says it is Sunday, May 8th, but it is on Saturday. And while the event will be its usual fun-packed day, the proceeds from this year are going to have a bit of a twist to them. The Ron R. Lee and Richard J. Rosenfield Athlete – Scholar Award was established to continue their spirit of leadership and to inspire and reward excellence in our students. The scholarship is awarded annually to a scholar-athlete from Onaga High School at the graduation in May. Several anonymous and generous alumni have issued a challenge, calling upon our communities to help fund this scholarship so that it will always be a source of support and pride for USD 322 Onaga – Havensville – Wheaton Buffaloes. The anonymous donors are matching all donations to the Lee/Rosenfield Scholarship during the week of May 2nd – May 8th, dollar for dollar up to $10,000, bringing the maximum project total to $20,000! Success in this endeavor will secure a solid future of support for Onaga student athletes. The Onaga Football Alumni group has stepped up to help sponsor this event. They will donate half of the proceeds from their golf tournament on Mother’s Day, May 7th, to the Lee/Rosenfield Scholarship! If you'd like to enter a team in the tournament, please contact Cool Springs Superintendent Craig Boswell at 785-477-1154. If you'd like to simply make a donation to this event, please contact Susie Kufahl, Director of the Caring Community Foundation in Onaga. For more details on the scholarship event, please follow the links below. https://5il.co/18jn3

Don't miss the annual Lift-A-Thon tonight! Each year the Lift-A-Thon is held to help raise money for the Onaga Jr/Sr. High School weight room. It is based on the total amount of weight a student can lift between the three lifts of bench, squat, and clean. Funding goes to new weight room equipment such as new rack systems, weight holders, bands, stereo system, etc. A copy of this year's form with more details is linked below, and a list of students participating is below as well. If you haven't signed up for a pledge yet and would like to, please reach out to one of those students to do so. Come join us tonight at 5:45pm in the north gym where our student/athletes will do their lifting and show off their gains from this year!
