Mrs. Labbe's physics class, as a culminating activity to the buoyancy unit, brought three boats, made entirely of cardboard and duct tape, to the pool at Community HealthCare Systems, Onaga.
Winning the individual timed race was "The Flying Dutchman," built by Brooklyn Boren, Jeramia Dorsey, Eva Krohn and Tyree FIgge. They also won an award for persistence and most enthusiastic rowing by Tyree. The "Jenny," built by Emma Kolterman, Alli Nider, and Wyatt Pennington, easily won the head to head race when all three boats were in the water at once. While the "Delorean", built by Julia Byers, Payton Falk, Zac Fisher, and Gabe Kufahl made an excellent showing initially, it won the Titanic Award for the most spectacular sinking!
Nice job to the seniors who completed these projects!

In the process, Lillie set the new school record for pole vault with a mark of 9 feet! Lillie's mark topped the previous record which was held by Kendra (VanDonge) Dunbar and Katie (Handley) Stucky, who both set the previous record of 7 feet in 2005.
Congratulations to Lillie on your record-setting day, and good luck the rest of the season!

Last week, the juniors and seniors went job shadowing as they learned more about careers that interest them. It was a great experience as each of them got hands-on knowledge of the field they are interested in pursuing. Here are a few of the students pictured in the job they were shadowing:
- Senior Jeramia Dorsey shadowed linemen putting in underground wire in Corning.
- Junior Olivia Shlegel shadowed Kayla Hulsing doing photography.
- Senior Dakota Gray shadowed the Marines.
- Senior Brooklyn Boren shadowed social worker Angie Savauge.
Thank you to Mrs. McNally for setting all of this up for our juniors and seniors!

Cheer tryouts are coming up! The first of two practices to gear up for the tryouts is tonight at 6:30pm. Please contact Andrea Merriman or Juley Kolterman with any questions or concerns.

Onaga's Zac Fisher was featured in the KSHSAA Covered list of "10 Baseball Players in Class 2-1A to Watch in 2023." Fisher made the list last year as well, although it was under a little different parameters. In 2022 it was 20 players in northeast Kansas 1-6A, as the publication did it by region. This year it was done by classification, meaning KSHSAA's media team has tabbed the senior Pitcher/Centerfielder as one of the 10 best players in the state in 2-1A heading into the season.
Fisher got off to a great start in the season opener when he went 4/8 on the night against Wabaunsee, while also scoring 7 runs and stealing 7 bases. His 7 runs scored are currently tied for first in the state of Kansas, with the two players he's tied with having played twice as many game. His 7 stolen bases are good for for the fifth most in the state, with, again, every player ahead of him having played twice as many games. He also pitched the second game of the night against the Chargers and went 4.0 innings, struck out 5, gave up no runs, and just two hits before the game ended due to a run rule.
Fisher was a 3rd Team All-State selection in 2022 and was joined by fellow senior Colby Simkins who was 2nd Team All-State, and sophomore Jackson Kolterman who was Honorable Mention All-State. They, and the rest of the Buffaloes, play Doniphan West/Riverside today at 4:30pm.
To read the full article on Fisher and the other players to watch in 2-1A this year, follow the link below.
Congratulations Zac!!!

The baseball and softball teams are back on the road today as the whirlwind of a season continues for both programs. The softball team will be in Wathena tonight to take on Riverside at 4:30pm. The Buffaloes enter the game 2-2 on the year after sweeping Doniphan West before dropping two to Wabaunsee in tight games. They'll take on a Cyclones team that started off their season with a sweep of ACCHS.
The baseball team will get its league play started this afternoon as it heads to Highland to take on the cooperative of Doniphan West and Riverside. Onaga is 2-0 after beating Wabaunsee 20-2 and 17-0 in its opener, and take on the Mustangs who have yet to play a game. First pitch is set for 4:30pm at Highland Community College.
To check out each team's schedule, stats for the season, results, even program history, follow the links below to each team's respective page on the school website. The addresses for each field is below as well.
