Mr. Kufahl's 6th hour class, History of Onaga & Pottawatomie County, went on a short field trip on Wednesday. After learning about the early people that lived in what is now our surrounding community, then about the founding of town here that were created prior to Onaga's existence, then about the creation of Onaga, the students are now learning about the town's early growth. City improvements that took place from 1880 through the end of the century have been the topic of late. Topics have ranged from the creation of the events that led to the town's first fire department, early water issues and how the citizens managed that, streets and lighting upgrades, and the creation of the Onaga Cemetery. Today the students visited some of the early buildings and structures discussed, and thanks to the Onaga Museum were able to compare pictures of them from over 100 years ago to today. The class then went to the cemetery to find the grave of Newton R. Jenison. The ladies of the town at the time set out to start a cemetery and in September of 1880 they secured the land where it sits today from Major R.W. Jenkins (of Jenkins Rd.). Jenison was the first person buried in the cemetery on October 30, 1880. It took some searching, but they found it!

Tomorrow night has unofficially become "Throw Back" night in Onaga. This week, in an effort to clear some space, the athletics department was selling old uniforms. Some are fairly recent uniforms, but some date back to the early 80s! The students and staff alike have been rummaging through the old high school and junior high cross country, volleyball, football, basketball, track, and cheerleading uniforms and are now geared up for a "Throw Back" night on Friday! The wrestling team will be hosting their jamboree in the north gym Friday evening, and the basketball teams will be playing all of their games in the south gym like they did from the 1930s through the early 1990s. The boys basketball team will be wearing old school warmups, the student section will be decked out in throw back gear, and the cheerleaders will be sporting old school looks as well. Many students are even planning to wear their new/old gear to school on Friday. So join us on Friday night in your favorite old school Onaga gear and pack the house! If you don't have any old school gear, the O'Club will have all of he old uniforms laid out in the commons area and it is all for sale at $1 per item, no matter what the item is. There is still a LOT of uniforms left so please take a look when you arrive! GO BUFFALOES!!!
