The American Flag is a time-honored symbol of freedom and liberty. For 247 years, Americans have honored this representation of democratic life. In USD 322, we hope to continue the respect and honor shone to the flag.
As you can see on this beautiful September day, both state and national flags are flying high. A newly formed middle school student group will soon take the lead on raising and lowering the flag. Over the past few weeks, intricate plans have been taking place behind the scenes to form a middle school Student Focus Group with the purpose of improving the middle school community, give voice to middle school students, and develop responsibility by taking ownership in planning and coordinating middle school functions. This group will work through an introductory exposure to parliamentary procedure, the basic rules for governing civil and democratic meetings. Through these functioning, the group will develop interpersonal and intrapersonal skills such as problem solving, gratitude, encouragement, and leadership while tackling local concerns such as anti-bullying practices.
The Student Focus Group is comprised of nine middle school students: three student representatives from each of the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Two of these three per grade level are elected by their fellow classmates, and one per grade level is elected by the middle school teachers.
Over the next few weeks, this group will work with the local Lion’s Club to learn proper flag handling. Once this training is complete, the student group will be responsible for the daily raising and lowering of the flags. We are extremely thankful to our local organizations for assisting in these civic engagement and learning practices for our students. There is a myriad of knowledge and history available within our community, and we are thankful to those who are willing to impart these attributes to our students through these partnerships.
Until the students take ownership of the flag handling responsibilities, they will be handled by adult staff members within the building.

• There are no fees to apply or participate in the program
• Multiple students per household can apply
• Awards can be used on academic camps, classes, tutoring, school supplies and technology, and more

PATHS is selling trash bags again and will be until next Thursday, October 5th. This is PATHS main fundraiser every year and all proceeds go to a great cause. They provide many services to the students at USD 322, and it's fundraisers like this that allow them to do so. Grade schoolers at the school are selling them and the class who sells the most will get an ice cream party! So get your trash bags before it's too late!

Here are the activities coming up this week!

In Mrs. Claycamp's senior English class this week, students were put to the test. They had to use technology and their knowledge of medieval history to make it out of the Canterbury Tales Escape room! A great lesson to bring fun to the classroom!

During the September meetings, the Board of Education approved proposed amendments to the Student Handbook.
The first corrected a consistency error between the Activities and the Student Handbook regarding the weekly eligibility date for activities and athletics. Eligibility will be run on Tuesday of each week.
The second was a change to the Royalty Candidacy criteria. All senior students enrolled at OHS their senior meeting, who meet general activities eligibility criteria, may be considered for candidacy.
Both can be found on page 10 of the Student Handbook on the USD 322 webpage.
