Every year when Mr. Kufahl's History of Onaga & Pottawatomie County class talks about the city improvements that took place in Onaga during its early years, the class goes out to the cemetery to find the grave of Newton Jenison. He was buried October 30, 1880, the first person buried in the Onaga cemetery and, although a newer tombstone has been erected since his death for he and other Jenisons buried near him, his original stone is still there. This semester the topic of "witching" graves came up in class, so they decided to take dowsing rods with them to "witch" his grave, and some of the unmarked graves at the cemetery, on Thursday morning. It was a unique experience and one that junior Wyatt Figge (pictured) enjoyed! In the process of walking around the cemetery looking for some of the people they'd been discussing in class, they happened upon a tombstone Mr. Kufahl hadn't seen before. In class last week, they had talked about the first elected officials of Onaga after the town established a city government. On Monday, Wyatt was looking for information on Garrard Nold, who was a druggist (pharmacist) in Onaga and had been elected as the town's first city clerk. While researching on newspapers.com, he found the obituary of Nold and the very interesting story of how he died. He saved the clipping from the October 1, 1885 issue of the "Onaga Democrat," which is attached. Then, while walking through the cemetery on Thursday morning, they happened upon his tombstone. It was a fun, educational trip through some Onaga history!

The high school football team is wrapping up the 2023 season tonight, as it heads to Valley Falls for a cross-district game with the Dragons. The last time these two teams met in a cross district game, five state records were broken and three more were tied as the two teams engaged in a shootout that saw the Buffaloes come out on top. Onaga will look to do the same tonight when the two teams kick off at 6:00pm. Good luck tonight boys! GO BUFFALOES!!! FOOTBALL TEAM PAGE https://www.usd322.org/page/football

The 3rd and 4th grade classes are diving into a project-based learning opportunity. They started by developing hypothesis, making guesses and estimating, then, they dove into the hands-on learning of measuring and counting. Upon completion of this step, they replanted seeds in the pumpkins to see how many new pumpkin plants they could grow. They want to send a big thanks to Ms. Figge for allowing them to house their pumpkins in the greenhouse and helping keep an eye on them!

Postseason volleyball has arrived for the Buffaloes as the team heads off to Wakefield today for the sub-state tournament. Onaga enters as the #6 seed in the 7-team field and will take on #3-seeded Solomon in the opening round. Games get underway at 1:00pm this afternoon and the girls will play the third match of the opening round. The entire tournament will be played today, with one team punching their ticket to the state tournament. For a complete look at the sub-state bracket, follow the link below to the team's page on the district website. The cross country team is also competing in postseason today as they head to Sabetha for the regional meet beginning at 10:00am. Sabetha is actually hosting 3A and 1A regionals today, with 3A girls starting things off. 1A girls will follow around 10:35am, 3A boys are scheduled to start at 11:10am, and the 1A boys will cap the day off at 11:45am. The Onaga boys don't have enough runners to qualify for state as a team, meaning they will need a top 5 finish among runners not on a state-qualifying team to punch their ticket to the state meet. Good luck today to all of our student-athletes! GO BUFFALOES!!! VOLLEYBALL TEAM PAGE https://www.usd322.org/page/volleyball CROSS COUNTRY TEAM PAGE https://www.usd322.org/page/cross-country
