USD 322 is excited to welcome Jackie Miller back to the district!
Jackie shares, "I am excited to have accepted a fourth grade position at Onaga Elementary School. I moved to Onaga in 2021 where I live with my husband and 7 children. I previously lived in Hiawatha where I was born and graduated from high school. I worked as an assistant preschool teacher for a few years and that is what encouraged me to get my degree in teaching. I graduated from Fort Hays State University in May of 2023 with a teaching license for grades K-6th. I completed my student teaching at Onaga with a third grade class and then spent this past school teaching fifth grade in Axtell, KS. Even though I have only lived in Onaga for a few years, I feel very connected to the community and families. My ideal classroom environment is calm and positive, and I feel that it is extremely important to have positive relationships between teachers, families, and students. Some of my favorite things are decorating, learning about history, and going to my children's activities."

Due to weather and teams traveling back home, State Golf start time is delayed by one hour.

Mr. Kufahl's History of Onaga & Pottawatomie County class had a fun semester this spring. From visiting "Con's Cave," old ghost towns like America City, Moodyville, etc., Louis Vieux's crossing, and many other places, they learned a lot about locations around the area. They learned a lot about the school's history, and explored several places there including the tunnels underneath the school and the fire damage from a 1950's lightning strike that there are still remnants of above the south gym's ceiling. They even visited Mr. Kufahl's grandma, Erma Kufahl, to get some interesting information about Wheaton and the school there as well.
It was another great semester of students learning about their roots, and exploring historical locations in the area to give them a deeper appreciation for this wonderful community!

The softball team is state bound! The girls began yesterday with a semifinal game against Valley Heights and fell behind 2-0 in the 4th inning, but a rally in the bottom of the 5th pulled things even and tied it up 2-2 before the game eventually went to extra innings. Then, in the bottom of the 8th, Abbie Ringel hit a three-run, walk-off shot to left field to win the game 5-2.
In the other semifinal game, Mission Valley beat Jackson Heights 9-4, setting up a championship game between the #1 seeded Buffaloes and #2 seeded Vikings. Mission Valley would score the first run in the top of the 1st inning, but Onaga would tie it back up in the bottom of the 3rd. The Buffaloes then added two more runs in the 4th to take a 3-1 lead. In the top of the 5th, the Vikings got the bases loaded with no outs, but the Buffalo defense tightened up and only allowed one run in the frame. No more runs would be scored in the game, and Onaga would pull off the championship win 3-2 to send them to the state tournament.
The bracket is not officially out yet, but the Buffaloes will be headed to Pratt next week for the tournament with all first round games being played on Thursday. It appears as though Onaga will be the #3 seed taking on #6 seeded Central Heights. The semifinal and championship will both be played on Friday. Stay tuned to the USD 322 social media and website for the bracket when it is released later this morning that will have game times.
Congratulations to the softball team, and good luck next week at state! GO BUFFALOES!!!

Combined Bus Routes 5/16/24

Due to postponement of softball games, buses will run normally.

Softball Games moved to tmrw 5/16 at 10:00am in Alma. Each following game will begin after a 25 minute warmup. Fields will be checked early tmrw morning to confirm playability.

Alma sustained too much rain with this shower. Softball girls are headed back home. More details to come.

Yesterday the golf and softball teams began postseason play with regional events. The golf team went to Washington for their regional meet, and ended up placing 3rd in the 7-team event. KSHSAA takes the top three teams from each regional to state, which means the team will head to Hesston for the two-day event this coming Monday.
Graham Valburg finished 6th in the 42-player event, shooting an 87 on the day. Konnor Nider finished tied for 8th with a 90, Koy Nider finished tied for 10th with a 91. Outside of the top 10 was Josh Daniels who finished tied for 15th with a 93, Bryson Conger was 25th with a 110, and Tatum Lara finished 40th with a 142.
The softball team also began their regional tournament yesterday in Alma, entering the event as the #1 seed. They took on Blue Valley yesterday afternoon and run-ruled the Rams in five innings, 10-0. They move on the semifinals today and will be back in Alma for the first game of the day at 2:00pm. They will take on #4 Valley Heights, who beat #5 Republic County 6-2 yesterday. If they win, they will then watch #2 Mission Valley take on #3 Jackson Heights in the other semifinal game. After that, the winners of the first two games will play in the championship game later this evening. Each game will begin 25 minutes after the conclusion of the one before.
The girls decided on a "Hawaiian" theme for today's game, so break out your favorite Hawaiian shirt and head out to Alma to support the girls today. Also, there will be a sendoff for them when they leave town for the game. The bus will depart the school at 11:30am this morning, so head up to main street and be loud and we send the girls off to Alma for a chance to punch their ticket to the state tournament!
