At the end of June, the wrestling team hosted a camp for Onaga wrestlers of all ages. In addition to the coaches that were there, they also brought in special guests to help tutor the kids on the sport during the two-day camp. Nasir Bailey was one of the guest coaches for the camp. Bailey was a national champion youth wrestler, a four-time high school state champion in Illinois, and was an All-American at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock this last season after finishing 4th at the NCAA Championships his freshman season. He's entering his sophomore year coming up in the fall, and heads into his second college season ranked as the #3 wrestler in the nation in the 133 pound weight class. Albert White was the other guest coach and is an assistant coach for Nasir and the Little Rock wrestling team. He brought an extensive knowledge of the sport to the camp with a decorated history of success in the sport. White finished his youth career in the early 2000s with three straight state championships, and won a freestyle national championship in high school. He finished his high school career as a four-time state champion with a 200-4 record, a then Illinois state record for career wins, and helped his team to two state titles as well. He then attended Northern Iowa Area Community College in 2008 where he was a national champion his freshman season in the 149 pound weight class. He then transferred to Oklahoma State University where he was 9-0 as a sophomore before a major injury derailed his career. Though he did come back, that injury and another potential career-ending injury prevented him from competing for more national championships and earning a spot on the 2016 U.S. Olympic team. He then moved on to coaching at the high school level before moving on to the collegiate level where he is today. Together with the Onaga coaches, Bailey and White offered our Buffalo wrestlers knowledge from some of the best to ever do it. The kids enjoyed the camp, became better wrestlers, and came out of it with memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you to Coach Merriman, Coach Miller, Coach Spevacek, and everyone else that helped make this event happen!
