Buffer week is this week, and, per KSHSAA Rules, it’s a week of no sports or sports practice. Buffer Week is put in place to make sure kids don’t go in after school to practice basketball or wrestling as an unfair advantage to the teams still in the playoffs.

The idea of replacing the current aging Onaga Elementary School began four years ago with the previous superintendent. The Board of Education pursued the idea under the direction of the State. BBN Architects Inc. of Manhattan, Kansas was chosen as the project designer largely because of their willingness to do the required state feasibility study. A very comprehensive review of the entire campus was also performed. As was predicted, the elementary school was identified as being the most insufficient building with a strong recommendation to build new.
An initial plan for a new building was designed with a cost of $21,000,000. This was viewed by the BOE as exceedingly expensive. Also during this time state aid for capital improvements was discontinued for most districts including USD 322. For these reasons the project lost traction. However, modified plans were presented periodically over the next few years. Eventually a plan was presented that the BOE felt was close to what would serve the district and would garner support from the public. At this time additional people were asked for their input and help in designing the school. Bond council was also acquired in Piper Jaffray.
In all, six design and location changes were made before settling on the current elementary building plans with a cost of $7,925,000. The school is to have a brick and mortar bottom course with a prefabricated truss system for the roof. The new building is very utilitarian in its concept with few architectural features. However, it does serve the needs of the district. These needs include updated kitchen accommodations, classroom space for projected enrollment, student/staff safety, and updated code compliance and infrastructure.
