USD 322 Summer Weight Program/Activities
As the 2019-2020 academic year came to an abrupt end, so did the athletic events and activities for Onaga High and Jr. High Schools. In order to be ready for the upcoming fall season, the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) has put into place guidelines for schools to follow to slowly prep student athletes for engagement at the beginning of the practice season set for Monday, August 17 for the 2020-21 school year.
To stay in compliance with KSHSAA and Governor Kelly’s guidelines, Grades 7 thru 12 student athletes planning to participate in the summer weight program, sport camps or fall activities must FIRST participate in a conditioning program. So before the summer weight program begins on Monday, June 15, Coach Ryan Noel has set up a 10-day conditioning program linked by an app download on cell phones. Student athletes are also enrolled in Google Classroom where information is posted. Summer programs do require a $3 fee for insurance coverage.
Rack weight program students can complete the 10 days of conditioning and ensure readiness to enter the weight room and participate in any camps held by a coach for their respective sport. Thru the phone app, Coach Noel is able to chart and keep records of student athletes as they complete the 10 conditioning activities, and then relay this information out to coaches. Once at least some portion of the offered 10-day program is completed, student athletes may sign up for a time in the weight room.
This year the weight room will be open 4 days a week in the morning (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) and 3 evenings (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday). Coaches have set procedures to ensure student athletes are safe by determining certain locations for entrance, checking body temperatures and limiting numbers in the weight room.
Again, it is imperative that students complete at least some of the 10 days of advance conditioning so they can join in the summer programs. USD 322 asks students to take the initiative to complete this conditioning program so coaches will be able to hold camps and have as many participants as possible. On the start of the fall sports practice date, Monday, August 17, KSHSAA fall activities guidelines will be followed.

If you would like to receive Harvesters food bags (like the ones sent home on Fridays during the school year) as I clear out inventory, please contact Mrs. Kolterman at koltermanju@usd322.org

We are pleased to have been able to find a way to offer drivers education to Onaga students this summer after finding out we would not be able to partner with USD 113- Sabetha as we have done in the past. We have partnered with the Greenbush Education Service Center who will provide an online drivers education program along with an online teacher, Mr. James King. We are fortunate to have a teacher who is certified for drivers education and will provide all of the in-car driving instruction, Mr. Jeff Koch.
There will be many more details shared as we move forward, but for today, here are the most important ones you need to be aware of.
Eligibility- students must be 14 by June 12 and entering 9th grade in the fall.
Tuition- the cost will be $205 and must be paid in full by June 12. Enrollment is not complete until this is paid. Make checks payable to USD 322. Checks can be turned in to the USD 322 District Office to Ann Hermreck (closed on Fridays)
June 12 is the last day to enroll and pay for tuition.
Once the student has submitted the necessary information to Mr. Poell via email(name, date of birth, email address and a contact phone number) and has paid in full at the district office with Ann Hermreck, I will share this with Greenbush and they will complete the enrollment process for the individual student. As soon as the online course enrollment steps have been completed for the student, they will be able to get started with the online course and their teacher, Mr. King.
Students will have up to 4 weeks to complete the course but it can be completed in less than 4 weeks depending on their rate of completion of work. They may start as soon as their enrollment is finalized.
At this point in time, the first day for in-car driving looks to be on July 1. If this changes, students and parents will be notified. We will have to take safety precautions for this part of drivers ed instruction and will share those out once they have been finalized.
Please be proactive in following the enrollment steps as quickly as you can so you can begin your online courses as soon as possible.
There will need to be flexibility with driving times in July knowing that Mr. Koch, in addition to being the in-car instructor, also farms and will have wheat harvest at some point, but the driving portion will get completed. Thanks for your understanding on this ahead of time.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at this point. Thank you.

This is just a reminder that even though our regular school year has come to an end, our meals being served are continuing on our regular schedule just like they have been. THANKS!

As the school year winds to a close today, we want to thank all of our students, parents, cooks, custodians, drivers, teachers, office managers, and paras for making the best out of a difficult situation that arose over spring break. We appreciate the fact that everyone did their very best while dealing with many stressors. Parents that were put in the role as teachers- we appreciate all you did to support your kids as best you could. You're amazing!
Thank you to everyone for your patience, grace, understanding, and flexibility. We all are hopeful that we will be able to be back in the school come August, but as you know, there are still a number of unknowns out there right now. Regardless, we will be prepared for all scenarios of teaching and learning and keep in communication with you as much as possible to provide accurate and timely information. Please keep safe this summer and take care!
