Another portion of last week's mock election was the debate held the day before the voting that was done by the entire school. The presidential candidates were represented by Caidin Meyer (Mike Pence), Rebecca Krohn (Donald Trump), Caidryn Kaberline (Joe Biden), and Glennys Ross (Kamala Harris). Mrs. VanDonge was the moderator for the debate. She and Mr. Kufahl prepared topics that pertained to actual current government issues and the candidates had to research and prepare to answer questions about those topics as if they were the actual candidates. The four students representing the candidates did an excellent job preparing, while the rest of the U.S. Government class helped them research and organized the debate and election. The senior class as a whole did a terrific job preparing the process while dealing with restrictions that currently exist due to Covid, and administered the debate and voting process with excellence.

On Tuesday Mr. Kufahl's U.S. Government class conducted the final portion of their mock election when they allowed the entire school, grades K-12, to vote. While high school students voted during their lunch period, the seniors that make up the U.S. Government class took the polling booths to each classroom in K-8 and allowed the students to go through a mock voting process. First, students had to register by showing a voter ID (their lunch card). The students then were given their ballot, they would enter the voting booth and select their choice for president, then would exit and put their ballot into the ballot box. The ballot boxes were borrowed from the Onaga Historical Society and were used for actual voting at the old Victory schoolhouse years ago. Then, as students returned to their seats they were given an "I Voted" sticker. Students really enjoyed going through the voting process and the hope was that it as an exciting way for them to learn about the civic duty to vote that they will all have someday.

The High School Cross Country team is in action on Saturday as it heads to Riley County for the 1A Regional meet. The boys race will begin at 12:00 PM and girls at 12:35 PM. Here are the KSHSAA Covid 19 considerations in place for the meet: - Schools will be able to list 10 runners on the regional entry form. Only 7 runners will be permitted at the regional site. This is to help mitigate the virus spread by limiting the number of people from different communities. - One manager per team permitted. - Two coaches per team permitted. - School administration permitted. - Face coverings must be worn when not socially distanced. - The starting line and boxes are closed until 10 minutes before the race. - Runners can’t do run-outs until that time. Face-coverings must be worn during this time. - Disposable face coverings are recommended for runners. - The starter will permit runners to remove face coverings one minute prior to the start of the race. - Face coverings should be placed in trash cans or boxes placed behind the starting line. - After the race is completed, runners should have time to recover and then wear face coverings. - Team members only should be permitted in the team tent/camp area. - As soon as possible teams and runners should board busses and leave the facility. - There will not be award ceremonies. Managers will put medals in packets and give to the coaches. Coaches will pick up plaques if the team places 1st or 2nd.

With winter not far away I wanted to write a note and let you know that there are MANY MANY things that go into making the call to alter the school schedule due to weather. Some of them include, when is the storm rolling in, what is the storm supposed to be as far as long term affects, what type of precipitation will it be, would it be safer to have busses running before it comes, during its early stages or maybe after it is over. Rest assured I place importance on going to school but also try and balance that reasonably with safe travel and expectations of attendance. Whenever I can reasonably do so I try and make “the call” for a late start or no school the night before so you have time to make other arrangements if you need to. Sometimes the decision will be right on, sometimes it will be completely wrong . Also, please remember that if you feel the call that was made was “wrong,” especially when it comes to having school in weather you think too difficult, you have every right to let us know that and keep your children at home, or if at school, come get them. It will not be counted against them in relation to homework or grades. As always if you have questions or concerns about anything at the school please feel free to give the school, the staff member involved, Mr. Poell or myself a call. Thanks, Mr. Polk

Buffalo Fun Club - Mrs. Kolterman and Mr. Goudy's group became masters at using their imaginations over the last couple of weeks. Our inspiration came from the book Big Friends by Linda Sarah and Benji Davis. Each box took on the personality and look of the kiddo in charge of creating the train car of their liking. We even had a partner car. So proud of these kids. This project took multiple days and lots of patience and understanding that there were more of them than the 2 of us as they each waited their turn for help with certain parts of their train car. Lots of fun was had by all!
