Please join us for a Meet & Greet from 3:45 to 4:30 this afternoon in the library, as USD 322 welcomes our second superintendent candidate, Mr. Michael Copple. He has spent 34 years in education. The first ten years of his career were spent teaching at the Topeka Juvenile Detention Center. With those students he learned the value of clear communication and treating everyone fairly. He then taught drafting, CAD, woodworking and construction at the Perry Lecompton School district for 6 years. He began his administrative career at Perry serving as the MS assistant principal and the Director of Support Services (transportation and food service.) During his twelve years as an administrator in the Perry district he served as the Assistant Principal at both the MS and HS. Mr. Copple then served as the HS principal. In 2016 he began working as the principal at Frontenac High School.
During Mr. Copple’s career, he has worked as an administrator in three diverse school settings. He believes these accumulated experiences have prepared him to meet the academic, developmental, and career readiness needs of all students while providing administrative support to school’s faculty and helping to manage district resources.
As the principal of Frontenac High School, he has guided the staff through updating the parent/student handbook and the faculty handbook in order to include new policies and procedures. He has also implemented Build Your Own Curriculum in an effort to strengthen our communication with parents and community members. He has focused much of initial efforts on building relationships with students and the community. The last two years he has been involved in multiple in-service training with staff to help implement SEL in their classrooms. As administrator, he has emphasized effective and appropriate use of technology in education and worked with teachers to ensure that they have the pedagogical and technical knowledge and skills to help students succeed.
Mr. Copple has been married to Gayla for 27 years. They have four children and three grandchildren. He is a member of the K of C, and enjoys hunting, fishing, gardening, woodworking and art.

I just got the opportunity to watch a dress rehearsal --- Act 1 of USD's production of Charlie Brown. How VERY impressive for a "first annual" musical presentation. I hope the public takes the time to see one of the shows this weekend, you won't regret it. I enjoyed it immensely, and am very proud of the students and staff involved. I think the public will be too!
Dan Polk, Superintendent of Schools

English has gone Clazy!
This week the 7th and 9th grade English classes are using their creative abilities using clay and other materials to portray books (or parts of books) that they have been reading.
The 9th graders are reading "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. They are recreating the scene where Scout and Jem make a snowman out of the first snow they have ever witnessed in Maycomb, AL. Their neighbor, Mr. Avery, blames the especially cold weather on a prophecy written on the Rosetta Stone that stated that the seasons would change if children disobeyed their parents, and fought with each other. He tells Jem and Scout that badly behaved children like them have caused the snow. Jem and Scout take advantage of the snow they can acquire from their yard and make a snowman. When Atticus comes home he notices that the snowman looks like Mr. Avery, so tells the children they need to change it, so they make it look like Miss Maudie. The 9th-grade students made their snowmen (or in one case a snow horse) to look like whatever they chose.
The 7th Grade students just finished reading "Soldier's Heart: A Novel of the Civil War," by Gary Paulsen. Each group drew one of the major battles of the Civil War and then drew to find out if they were the Union or the Confederates. They researched their part of the war and will recreate it with dioramas which will be displayed next to each other, depicting the war they researched.
Hopefully, the dioramas and snowmen will be displayed in the library starting next week.

Congratulations to our 4th Grade Readers of the Week!
1st - Wyatt Rager
2nd - Jovin Matson
3rd - Ellie Starns
4th - Blaine Blaske
