On Monday the junior high scholar's bowl team ended their season with the OTL meet in Troy, and it was quite the success for Onaga! Both the 7th and 8th grade teams left undefeated with the 1st place medal! The 8th Grade team was especially exciting to watch as they went into a tie breaker question two times to defeat Doniphan West and Sts. Peter & Paul. Head coach Holly Thomas was not able to get all of the 7th grade scores since the 7th grade and 8th grade teams competed at the same time during the championship round, but the scores she did have are as follows: 8TH GRADE Onaga 70 vs. Centralia 55 Onaga 60 vs. D-West 50 Onaga 60 vs. SPPS 50 Championship Round 1 - Onaga 80 vs. Wetmore 20 Championship Round 2 - Onaga 60 vs. Centralia 55 7TH GRADE Onaga 70 vs. Centralia 10 Onaga 80 vs. D-West 30 Onaga 80 vs. SPPS 20 All season long, the 8th grade team was a force to be reckoned with, going undefeated on the year. Consistent top scorers were Monty Meyerkorth, Xavier Berges, and Adalei Conley. The 7th grade team started a little slow, but quickly picked up momentum on their way to the league title. Consistent top scorers for the 7th grade team were Luke Poell, Andi Wegman, and Ava Baxter. Congratulations to both the 8th and 7th grade teams and to first-year head coach Holly Thomas on great seasons! GO BUFFALOES!!!

On January 28th, sophomore Zach Peters and freshman Lillie Weiser performed their forensic pieces at the Sabetha meet. Lillie performed her prose that she has been working on, and Zach and Lillie performed three IDA skits. Neither one broke into the finals, but their overall best in their three rounds was 5th in IDA and 4th in prose. On February 25th, sophomore Wyatt Boggs and Lillie performed their forensic pieces at the Marysville meet. Lillie performed her prose and Wyatt performed an informative speech. Together, they performed three IDA skits. Neither one broke into finals, but their overall best in their three rounds was 3rd in informative, 2nd in prose, and 2nd in IDA. On February 26th, Lillie volunteered her time to perform for the "Dinner and a Show" night in Havensville. She performed her forensics prose and had the crowd laughing at her humorous piece. She did a wonderful job! The proceeds from the event helped the Havensville community. Nice job Wyatt, Zach, and Lillie!

Ms. Kolterman’s 5th and 6th grade science classes have been working hard on their biggest project of the year. KidWind is a challenge sponsored by the Kansas Energy Program and provides students with kits to make their own energy generating wind turbine. This year she had 56 students on 13 teams complete this project. Students not only learned about creating energy using wind power, but we’re also able to face their challenges head on and overcome difficult situations. A school competition was held on February 24th to determine the top two energy producing teams. The winners were The Silly Geese (Ryder Kolterman, August Falk, Gabe McKinsey, and Cahlan Kaberline) and The Big Wind (Justin Wrosch, Hudson Baxter, Blaine Blaske, Peyton Rice, and Wyatt Rager). These two teams have now earned the honor of representing our school at the regional competition in Manhattan on February 28th. Congratulations to our winning teams and good luck in Manhattan tomorrow!

As a part of the winter recreation unit, and thanks to generous donation from Jim Moore with Farmer’s State Bank, Mrs. Thomas took the high school OREO class on an exciting trip recently. The group travelled to Weston, MO to learn how to ski - and what a success it was! All students learned how to navigate green slopes while some progressed to blues. OREO stands for Outdoor Recreation Educational Opportunity and Mrs. Thomas teaches this class at both the high school and junior high levels. The class centers around environmental education for students, while giving them an appreciation for the outdoors and an understanding of the many recreational ways people can enjoy them. Keep up the great work Mrs. Thomas!

The OHS Scholar's Bowl team wrapped up their season a couple of weeks ago at the regional tournament in Frankfort. The varsity team ended the season with an overall record of 14-28 and participated in six meets. The highlight of the season was going 6-6 at the league meet which is an all-day event consisting of 12 rounds! The JV team ended the year with an overall record of 15-9 and participated in 3 meets. The highlight of the JV season was making the finals at their first meet, and lost by one question in the final round to take home a much deserved 2nd place medal. They will be fun to watch in the next few years. As a team, the kids answered 247 questions correct this year. Individual top scoring honors go to sophomore Wyatt Boggs with 73 questions answered. Freshman Brayden Poell was second with 61, and fellow freshman Lillie Weiser was third with 42. A special thank you to our senior captain Julia Byers, and the other seniors who helped along the way, Klara Aquist, Emma Kolterman, and Gabe Kufahl. You will be missed!
