All weather reports are warning of a massive winter snowstorm headed our way. The timing of this storm is to hit just as our buses head out and students/staff start heading to school. The possibility of getting everyone to school and then having to send all home early is quite high. Consequently, USD 322 will not have school tomorrow, Monday, January 8. All activities and practices are canceled. The January board meeting has been rescheduled for Wednesday, January 10. Stay safe and warm!

As the second semester gets set to begin, upperclassmen will be on the hunt for scholarships as they look to their future after their time at Onaga High School. Scholarship opportunities will begin to flood in, so make sure to periodically check out Mrs. McNally's page on the district website called "Counselor's Desk." Kady Figge, a 2020 OHS graduate and a current student in the College of Agriculture at Kansas State University, was a guest speaker in Ms. Cromer's Business Communication class during the final week of the first semester. Kady is a member of the Agricultural Communications and Journalism Advancement Team at K-State and as part of this team, she visits high school classes to take the opportunity to connect with students and facilitate workshops. After presenting a Photography workshop she had the students take some photos in the classroom, displaying the elements of photography that she explained to the students. The students then shared some of their favorite photos and Kady provided positive feedback of the elements they captured. The students enjoyed the presentation and recommend Kady return for more workshops!

As you settle in for a new year's day full of college football excitement, we want to recognize some football excitement of our own. In December, Sports in Kansas began releasing it's All-State football teams and two Buffaloes find themselves on a couple of their lists. Juniors Jackson Kolterman and Dylan Magnett received the first All-State accolades of their career, as both were named Honorable Mention All-State for Class 1A. In addition to that accolade, Sports in Kansas also has an All-State team for non-seniors, a look at the potential for the next season. Both juniors also found themselves on the 1A Honorable Mention list for that as well. The All-State honors for both athletes come on the heels of each being named 1st Team All-League by the TVL at the end of November. Kolterman was named 1st Team as a defensive back, while Magnett was named 1st Team All-League as both an offensive lineman and defensive lineman. Congratulations to both Jackson and Dylan on your accomplishments! 1A ALL-STATE https://sportsinks.com/sports-in-kansas-2023-1a-all-state-football/ 1A NON-SENIOR ALL-STATE https://sportsinks.com/sports-in-kansas-2023-non-senior-football-team/

Mrs. Glessner's middle school students worked on a fun project in the final weeks of the first semester. It was a research project in conjunction with the Onaga museum that included several trips and research at the museum with the Historical Society members as their guides. In the final days of the semester, the students completed their writing activities and compiled them into a binder for the museum to add to their "Local Writers" display. Each student wrote an informative paper telling about their trips to the museum, and then a fictional paper that included a person or item from the museum. It was a very rewarding experience and the students learned a lot, especially how important it is to take good notes during their research! They are looking forward to visiting again in the spring to explore a different section of the museum.

At the end of last week, Mr. Claycamp's PE classes spent a couple days learning self-defense techniques. The classes were offered by officers from the Onaga and Saint Marys Police Departments, with the goal of students learning how to get themselves out of potentially dangerous situations. The first rule they learned is always to avoid the conflict or fight. Students were taught how to recognize an attacker and how to potentially get out of the situation. Students had fun learning these techniques, even though they hope to never have to use them. Thank you to the officers who provided this training for our students!
