September Site Council Meets

U.S.D 322 Site Council

September 5, 2012

          The Site Council for U.S.D. 322 was called to order on September 5, 2012, by Sharon Bosse, Chairperson, at 6:38pm in the school library. The following individuals were present for the meeting:  Sharon Bosse, Dan Peters, Dr. Fred Marten, Mary Pennington, Amy Spoonts, Debbie Berges, and Robin Kolterman.  Minutes were approved via email prior to the meeting.

Old Business:

Amy Spoons reported for Sandra Hill (OGS Grade School Principal). Common Core Standards were the topic of discussion. These standards will be implemented nationwide by 2014-2015. It is a way to have a nationwide set of standards for each grade level verses each state having their own standards.  A team from Onaga Grade School went to a 3 day training this summer with focus on how the new standards are streamlined with the current standards. The main difference being instruction on fewer standards and more in depth instruction in each one. The areas of logic and reasoning will also be utilized more intensely. Amy also reported on the Grade School enrollment numbers. The numbers are as follows: Early Childhood Special Education (E.C.S.E)- 14, Grade School- 201, High School-118. The numbers have remained approximately the same as last year. The next report was on summer school which was held one week after school let out last May. Jump Start was also available this year two weeks prior to the start of school. Amy stated both went well and attendance was good. This fall the school had H.O.W.D, the Trust Company and an anonymous donor, donate school supplies for the students. Dr. Marten reported on the school lunch situation. The state has mandated the schools as to what and how much can be served at lunch. This year there will be no seconds on entrée items however, a student may choose to eat as many fruit or vegetables they wish. A “super” card has been developed for those wishing to purchase another entrée. Dr. Marten reported “We are working through this process”.

         Dr. Marten presented the Council with the District and High School Updates. A new roof is over the school, however a couple issues arose while doing so, thus he is seeking the roofing company to also repair damage to the grade school fence and blacktop. Greg Schmelzle is working on changing out the lighting in the school buildings with an energy efficient system. Activities at the High School level are up a going. The District budget was approved. Teacher negotiations have not been settled at this time.

         Debbie Berges provided a visual triage regarding the OGS Counseling and Guidance. It focuses on the ABCs (Academics, Behaviors and Careers). Debbie stated there are many groups which the children may become involved: Lego Club, Game Club, Poetry Club, Culture Club and R-squad. Debbie also reported that “Social Climate” – the anti-bulling campaign is planning a program for the students on October 18 with NetSmart. NetSmart is a program designed for children and parents in regard to safe internet surfing and awareness of bulling online. It is hoped that a parent session can be held in the evening of October 18th. The Crisis Team will be meeting on September 6th. Debbie reported that she will have a “Character of the Month.” This month’s “Character” is Responsibility. Debbie also reported having many activities planned for the 7th/8th grade guidance. One of which being Susan Simons, speaking on apprenticeship programs.

         Mary Pennington reported on the PATHS (Parents and Teachers Helping Students) Group.  The “Spring Fling” went very well and it was nice to see so many people from the community. PATHS  received their group tax id number as well as a P.O. Box. The box number is 411, Onaga, KS.

         The Board of Education update was not available due to the scheduled board meeting on Monday, September 10.

New Business

         It was brought to the Site Councils attention that Hillary Koch would be resigning her position due to prior obligations.  

         With no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 8:36p.m. The next Site Council will be held the 1st Wednesday of November, 2012. Addendum:November 7th meeting was cancelled and next meeting is to be announced at a later date.
