In 1996 the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHAA) Executive Board approved the formation of a Student Advisory Team (SAT) to represent student voices in Activities Association governance. The Activities Association is the governing body that makes all of the rules for high school sports in Kansas. The SAT is a council of six boys and six girls who help decide things such as new rules. They also discuss various other topics of importance.
Kylar Meyer started writing an essay after he had been notified that he had been nominated. Mr. Stumpf had teachers nominate three sophomore boys to write essays, and Meyer’s essay was the one chosen to be sent in. In his essay Meyer wrote about how teams that have spirit succeed more often and how schools with more activities seem to have communities that thrive.
Mr. Stumpf and Meyer’s parents inspired him to write this essay. What mainly made him choose to write the paper was his mom, but he also wanted to try this because it was something new and different from what he normally does. He is glad he wrote the paper now. One reason why he went ahead with this was because he thought it was important for students to have their say.
When Meyer found out he was one of six in the state of Kansas to become a member of the SAT this year, he was overwhelmed. He talked to his parents. He was shocked and excited at this chance at something new. Meyer is the first student that Mr. Stumpf has nominated to make it onto the council.
The meetings of SAT are held in Topeka twice annually, once in October and once in March. The specific dates have not been decided. The Athletic/Activities director or a family representative designated by the school will serve as Meyer’s supervisor at the meetings.
