Hop-A-Thon a Success

Hopping for Hope and for Help

Onaga Elementary School hosted its first Hop-A-Thon for Muscular Dystrophy on May 10 in the old high school gymnasium.  All students in grades K though 6 along with a few 7th and 8th graders participated in the Hop, raising a total of $2742.18 for MDA through pledges and donations.  The three goals of the Hop were 1) to educate the students about Duchene’s muscular dystrophy through a classroom curriculum provided to each teacher; 2) to have fun hopping yet increasing physical fitness; and 3) raise funds for MDA.  All three goals were met.

To kick off the Hop, Mrs. Anne Suther led all the students and staff in the Bunny Hop followed by the Hokey Pokey to music provided by Gilbert and Judy Wegner.  The background music provided the “beat” for 129 registered hoppers in their two minute hop.   The number of hops in this amount of time ranged from 100 by a first grader to 380 in a tie between a first grader and a fifth grader.  The top two hoppers per class were entered in a hop-off.  Top hopper Wyatt Minihan; second place went to Jace Fischer; and placing third was Cheyenne Dice.  Guest hopper for Dylan and Dawson Brunkow was Dad Scott Brunkow.  With a son riding piggy back, Scott hopped the full two minutes for each son.

OGS thanks all the financial donors to the Hop-A-Thon.  The top ten collectors were Cheyenne Brunkow, Dawson Brunkow, Dylan Brunkow, Kyanna Devlin, Shay Duer, Taylor Falk, Chloe Fischer, KC Koelzer,  Sam Kufahl, and Wyatt Magnett.  Your support of our student hoppers and the goals of Muscular Dystrophy Association were greatly appreciated.
