Publications Students Excel at State

Competitors Bring Home Twelve Awards

     One hundred eighteen Kansas high schools proved their journalism talents at the Kansas Scholastic Press Association State Contest May 2.  The contest took place at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, with a total of 1,056 entries.

      Students qualified for the state contest by placing at one of six regional contests in February. At the state contest, students participated in 18 categories: Advertizing, Editorial Cartoon, Feature Photography, News Writing, Sports Photography, Yearbook Sports Writing, Cutline Writing, Editorial Writing, Headline Writing, Newspaper Design, Yearbook Copy Writing, Theme Developement and Graphics, Editing, Feature Writing, Infographics, Newspaper Sports Writing, Yearbook Layout, and Broadcasting. 

    Onaga High School placed 12 entries in the 2A classification:  Robin Helget, Feature Writing 3rd, Theme Development and Graphics 2nd, Infographics 1st; Maggie Mangas, Newspaper Design 3rd, Feature Writing 1st; Molly Stambaugh, Feature Photography 2nd; Team of Molly Stambaugh and Kayla Moser, Theme Development and Graphics HM; Kayla Moser, Advertising 2nd; Stephanie Murray, Yearbook Sports Writing 1st; Macy Magnett, Editorial Cartoon HM; Elaina Broughman, Yearbook Layout HM, Yearbook Copy Writing 1st.  

     OHS Publications qualified 17 entries through the Regional Journalism Contest at Kansas State University in Manhattan.  The 12 state-award-winning entries comprise the highest number of state contest awards ever for OHS.

     In sweepstakes competition, OHS also placed higher than ever before, 2nd among all 2A schools in the state.  Adviser Mr. Kite is extremely proud of these students.
